Kaloa 2 is one of the most prominent and populous villages of No. 1 Kaya Union under Kumarkhali Upazila in Kushtia district. Situated on the basin of the Gorai River, this village is well-known across the region primarily for its agricultural prosperity and tranquil, close-knit rural environment. Due to the large size of Kaloa village within the union’s administrative setup, it is divided into various neighbourhoods (paras) and sections, amongst which the Kaloa 2 section is highly advanced in terms of its educational and social structure.

Geographical Location and Boundaries
Kaloa 2 village is located at the north-western edge of Kaya Union. According to Google Maps and local Mouza maps, the Gorai River flows along the northern and western sides of the village, providing it with a natural boundary. The village is bordered by Uttar Kaya to the east and Berkaloa village to the south. Due to its location in the river basin, the topography here is predominantly composed of fertile alluvial flatland.
Population and Demographics
According to data from the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) and the local administration, the total population of Kaloa 2 village is approximately 3,250. Of this, the number of males is around 1,660 and females number about 1,590. The average male-to-female ratio is roughly 100:96. There are about 740 households in the village. In terms of religious composition, the village is predominantly Muslim, though the minority Hindu community has also been living here for generations in absolute communal harmony.
Education and Educational Institutions
The average literacy rate of the village is approximately 59%. Kaloa Government Primary School (established in 1932) has been playing the primary role in spreading primary education, along with some other private educational initiatives in the adjacent areas. For secondary and higher education, the students of this village mostly depend on Kaya College or various reputable institutions in the Kumarkhali Upazila headquarters. According to BANBEIS and the Jashore Education Board, the enrolment rate of students from this village in technical and higher education has increased significantly in recent years.

According to the digital land zoning database of the Ministry of Land, nearly 75% of the total land in Kaloa 2 village is arable. Being enriched by the silt of the Gorai River, the land yields good harvests of paddy, jute, wheat, and linseed. However, the local farmers enjoy a special reputation particularly for growing onions, garlic, and chillies. Around 70% of households earn their livelihood directly or indirectly through agriculture. Lately, local youths are showing an increased interest in establishing commercial fruit orchards and livestock farms.

Religious and Social Institutions
As part of its religious heritage, Kaloa 2 village houses 3 Jame Mosques and 1 ancient temple. There is a central Eidgah ground for the religious and social gatherings of the Muslim community. Additionally, a puja mandap and a cremation ground (by the river) are preserved for the Hindu community. The local arbitration and dispute resolution system, comprised of village elders, remains active to this day in maintaining social order.

Kaloa 2 village falls under Ward No. 8 of No. 1 Kaya Union. According to the Union Parishad database, the total number of voters in the village is around 1,950. The Village Police (Gram Police) are deployed to maintain local peace and order. The elected UP Member and local elders lead various developmental activities and help resolve social issues. Occupation and Economy
The village economy is primarily reliant on agriculture and labour. Alongside farmers, there is a notable number of masons, carpenters, and small-scale traders in the village. Thanks to the improved transport system, many people commute daily to Kumarkhali or Kushtia town for business or employment. Furthermore, a significant portion of the village workforce is employed abroad, contributing to the national economy through remittances. Rural women also generate supplementary income for their families through poultry rearing and tailoring work.
Social Challenges and Potential
Being situated next to the banks of the Gorai River, riverbank erosion during the monsoon is one of the primary natural challenges for Kaloa 2 village. Low-lying agricultural lands are occasionally flooded, causing crop damage. However, efforts are underway to mitigate this risk through the government’s river training and permanent embankment projects. With planned infrastructural development and effective prevention of river erosion, Kaloa 2 village is poised to emerge as a model, self-reliant village within Kaya Union.
