Kaloa 1 is one of the most prominent and ancient villages of No. 1 Kaya Union under Kumarkhali Upazila in Kushtia district. Geographical Location and Boundaries
Kaloa 1 village is located at the north-western edge of Kaya Union. According to Google Maps and local Mouza maps, the Gorai River flows along the northern and western sides of the village, providing it with a natural water boundary. The village is bordered by Kaloa 2 to the east and Berkaloa village to the south. Due to its location in the river basin, the topography here is flat and composed of highly fertile alluvial soil.
Population and Demographics
According to data from the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) and the local Union Parishad, the total population of Kaloa 1 village is approximately 3,620. Of this, the number of males is around 1,850 and females number about 1,770. The average male-to-female ratio is roughly 100:96. There are about 830 households in the village. In terms of religious composition, the village is predominantly Muslim, though followers of the Sanatan (Hindu) faith have also been living here for generations in absolute communal harmony.
Education and Educational Institutions
The average literacy rate of the village is approximately 60.5%. Kaloa Government Primary School (established in 1932) has been playing the primary role in spreading primary education. For secondary and higher education, the students of this village mostly depend on Kaya College or various educational institutions in the Kumarkhali Upazila headquarters. According to BANBEIS and the Jashore Education Board, the enrolment and pass rates of students from this village in technical and higher education have increased significantly in recent years.

Being enriched by the silt of the Gorai River, the land yields abundant harvests of paddy, jute, wheat, and pulses. Residential structures have seen a touch of modernisation; currently, about 45% of the houses in the village are brick-built (pucca) or semi-brick-built (semi-pucca).
Religious and Social Institutions
As part of its religious heritage, Kaloa 1 village houses 4 Jame Mosques and 1 temple. There is a central Eidgah ground for the religious and social gatherings of the Muslim community. Additionally, a puja mandap and a cremation ground (on the riverbank) are preserved for the Hindu community. The local arbitration and dispute resolution system, comprised of village elders, remains highly effective to this day in maintaining social order.

The Village Police (Gram Police) regularly patrol to maintain local peace and order. The elected UP Member and local elders lead various developmental activities and help resolve social issues. Occupation and Economy
The village economy is primarily reliant on agriculture and labour. Alongside farmers, there is a notable number of masons, carpenters, and small-scale traders in the village. Thanks to the improved transport system, many people commute daily to Kumarkhali or Kushtia town for business or employment. Furthermore, a significant portion of the village workforce is employed abroad, contributing to the national economy through remittances. Rural women also generate supplementary income for their families through poultry rearing and cottage industries.
Social Challenges and Potential
Being situated next to the Gorai River, riverbank erosion during the monsoon is one of the primary natural challenges for Kaloa 1 village. Low-lying agricultural lands are occasionally flooded, causing crop damage. However, permanent measures are being taken to mitigate this risk through the government’s river training and permanent embankment projects. With planned infrastructural development and effective prevention of river erosion, Kaloa 1 village is poised to emerge as a model, self-reliant village within Kaya Union.
