Today is the birthday of ‘Rhythm Magician’ Satyendranath Dutt. He is credited with the use of rhyme, words, and language in his poems. This Bengali poet and rhymer were born on 11 February 182 in the village of Nimata, not far from Calcutta. His ancestral home is in the “Chupi” village of Burdwan.

In Satyendranath’s poems, words of different languages ​​have been added in skillful rhythm. He has also done translation work in Bengali from different languages. He was well versed in a wide range of intellectual subjects, including Indian history, culture and mythology in the Middle Ages.

Satyendranath passed the entrance examination from Central Collegiate School, Calcutta in 1899. He then passed his FA in 1901 from the Assemblies Institution (now Scottish Church College). He joined his father’s business before devoting himself to poetry. He was one of the poets of Bharati Patrika Group.

In his early life, he was influenced by Michael Madhusudan Dutt, Akshay Kumar Baral and others. Although he later became a follower of Rabindranath, then he became independent.

He is credited with increasing the power of the Bengali poetic language by the combined use of Arabic and Persian words with Bengali words. Through translation, he brought Bengali into contact with world poetry. Satyendranath Dutt has written poems under the pseudonyms of Navakumar, Kabiratna, Ashitipar Sharma, Tribikram Barman, Kalamgir etc.

In 1918, his famous work on rhyme, Chhand-Saraswati, was published in the Baishakh issue of Bharati. Satyendanath translated many poems into Arabic-Persian, Chinese, Japanese, English, and French and added variety and richness to Bengali literature. He also wrote poems about the neglected, untouchable, and common people of the society.

In his short life, Satyendanath Dutt, the king of rhyme in literature, has written over 12 books of poetry. Poet Satyendranath Dutta passed away on 25 February 1922 at the age of only forty.
