Martyrdom Anniversary of Bir Shreshtho Mohiuddin Jahangir to be observed today, 14 December , Death anniversary of Bir Shreshtho Mohiuddin Jahangir to be observed today, 14 December
Today is December 14, the martyrdom anniversary of Birshreshtha Captain Mohiuddin Jahangir. On this day in 1971, he was martyred in the battle at a place called Rehaichar on the banks of Mahananda in Chapainawabganj.
Jahangir is one of the seven heroes who were awarded the highest military honor of Bangladesh “Bir Shrestha” in recognition of their extreme bravery and outstanding heroism in the great liberation war of Bangladesh.
He was born on 6 March 1949 in Rahimganj village of Babuganj upazila of Barisal district. He studied at his uncle’s house in Patarchar village of Muladi upazila. He passed Matriculation in Science from Muladi Mahmud Jan Pilot High School in 1984. He passed higher secondary from Barisal BM (Brajmohan) College in 1986. After passing, he took the initiative to join the air force but it did not happen due to eye problems. He then joined the army while studying statistics at Dhaka University. He was commissioned in the Army Corps of Engineers in 1986.
He was in Pakistan at the beginning of the war of liberation. But after the start of the war he fled to India and joined the war. He was martyred at the dawn of independence.
In the eyes of his comrades-in-arms, Mohiuddin Jahangir was a very wise and fearless warrior. He also had many dreams of an independent country. But, unfortunately, he was martyred just two days before the country became independent.
Bazlur Rashid Sonu of Kalupur village in Shibganj upazila of Chapainawabganj was one of those who were in that battle with Birshreshtha Captain Mohiuddin Jahangir.
He was involved in burial activities at the premises of Sona Mosque via Shibganj after retrieving the body of Mohiuddin Jahangir.
He said, ‘I first met Captain Jahangir in May. He wore a lungi-genji like a normal person. He lived with everyone else of Mukti Bahini. He used to eat and drink the same. Was successful as a commander. He was also successful in guerrilla warfare. He had only one dream. That is the dream of liberating the motherland.
One day Captain Jahangir told everyone in the camp who would go to liberate the city of Chapainawabganj from the hands of the Pakistani invaders. According to the decision of that day, we took a position in a temporary camp at Laxmipur Primary School in Bargharia under his leadership.
In the middle of the night on 13th December, Captain Jahangir with about 50 freedom fighters crossed the Mahananda river through Akandabaria ghat in a few boats and took up position at Rehaichar in the city. The rest took up position in Bargharia.
“There was a Pakistani army base near the present bridge on the south side of the Mahananda,” he said. During the day, the Pakistanis retreated. However, at one stage in the evening, Captain Mohiuddin Jahangir was shot in the eye and was martyred on the spot.
‘We took his body from there across the Mahananda to Shibganj. The next day, on 15 December, after the first janaza and the second janaza at Shibganj Hospital, he was buried at the premises of Sona Mosque, next to the grave of another hero of the liberation war, Martyr Major Nazmul Haque.
Bazlur Rashid Sonu said that on this day, December 14, 1971, just two days before the victory, Captain Mohiuddin Jahangir was desperate to liberate his motherland. Jahangir, a young military officer from Togbag in Barisal, always thought of liberating the motherland from the enemy.
He was the Mohdipur Sub-Sector Commander of Sector 7. Sector Commander was Lt. Colonel Kazi Nuruzzaman.
