Last week, I visited Brahmanbaria. At an event there, I was presented with a report titled “Development in Brahmanbaria”, which outlines the overall progress of the district. It provides a detailed account of advancements in infrastructure, education, healthcare, agriculture, and industry, whilst highlighting the significance of far-sighted government planning, active public participation, and the effective implementation of various projects.
Over the past decade, Brahmanbaria has emerged as one of the premier models of regional development in Bangladesh. Situated on the banks of the River Titas, this district is no longer celebrated merely as the cultural capital of the region, but as a thriving hub of modern infrastructure and economic prosperity. Driven by this synergy of state planning and civic engagement, the district is marching steadily towards a future of sustainable development.

Given Brahmanbaria’s immense geographical importance, its transport and communication network has undergone a revolutionary transformation.
- Highways and Regional Roads: As a vital nexus linking the Dhaka–Sylhet and Chittagong–Sylhet highways, the district’s major arterial roads have been widened and upgraded to four lanes. Furthermore, the modernisation of rural roads has significantly energised the grassroots economy.
- Bridges and Culverts: The construction of multiple bridges across the River Titas and the Nabinagar–Shibpur–Radhika road has established direct, seamless connectivity between once-isolated remote pockets and the district headquarters.
- 100% Electrification and Energy: As one of the nation’s primary sources of natural gas, the district has successfully achieved total electrification, ensuring every household has access to power. Even the remote char (river island) areas have felt the touch of progress through solar home systems.
2. Education and Human Capital: Nurturing Global Talents
The district has achieved remarkable success in elevating the quality of education and promoting technology-driven learning.

4. Agricultural and Industrial Revolution: New Horizons of Prosperity
Brahmanbaria is rapidly diversifying from a traditionally agrarian economy into a dynamic centre for industrialisation.

5. Preserving Heritage and Civic Engagement
A defining feature of Brahmanbaria’s progress is the harmonious balance struck between modernity and tradition.

- Public Participation: A model for sustainable development has been established by ensuring that local communities are consulted and actively involved in every major development project.
Today, Brahmanbaria is undergoing a profound transformation. Well-planned infrastructure, modern education and healthcare systems, and the integration of technology in agriculture have elevated the standard of living to unprecedented heights. If this momentum is sustained, Brahmanbaria is well on its way to becoming one of the crown jewels of a Smart Bangladesh.
