In modern urban life, the Bengali letter “ri” (ঋ) has, in many ways, been reduced to its appearance in words such as “loan”. The deeper spiritual association it once carried—evoked in the word “rishi”—has largely faded. Likewise, under the growing impact of climate change, the rich and varied expressions of the seasons are no longer as vividly experienced as they once were.
On paper, however, seasons still exist—defined as divisions of the year based on changes in local weather patterns. While most parts of the world recognise four primary seasons—spring, summer, autumn, and winter—the land of Bengal has traditionally embraced six distinct seasons, each with its own unique character.
Whatever remains of this natural diversity cannot be fully experienced without music. One of the foundational principles of rāga music is its ability to capture the transformations of nature and the changing moods of the seasons. To deepen this connection between the human heart and the rhythms of nature, we have curated this index of seasonal songs.
List of Seasonal Music (Ritugaan)
- Summer (Grishma)
- Monsoon (Barsha)
- Autumn (Sharat)
- Late Autumn (Hemanta)
- Winter (Sheet)
- Spring (Basant)
Seasonal songs are not merely a form of entertainment; they offer a way to reconnect with the pulse of nature. When we listen to the rāgas or songs associated with each season, we do not simply hear sound—we begin to feel the breeze, the fragrance, and the mood of that season within ourselves.
The songs and ragas included in this collection are intended to make your journey through the cycle of seasons more melodious and immersive.
