Editor sued on libel charge

An assistant editor of a weekly, also a contractor, has filed a defamation case against editor, publisher and chairman of the editorial board of a daily newspaper in Kushtia. Nurul Islam Chand, assistant editor of weekly Kushtia Barta, filed the case against Gazi Mahbub Rahman, editor and publisher of daily Ajker Alo, and Sufi Faruq, chairman of the editorial board of the daily.

Nurul Islam Chand, also vice-president of Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB) Kushtia unit, filed the case with the Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court here on Sunday.
In the case statement, Chad alleged that the daily published three reports against him in its November 12, 13 and 25 issues. The reports were not based on facts and published only to tarnish his image, Chand said.

Chand further stated that he went to the newspaper office and requested Editor Gazi Mahbub Rahman and Chairman of the Editorial Board Sufi Faruq to publish rejoinders on the news items. “They turned down my request and threatened to publish more reports against me,” he alleged.

The court asked the authorities concerned to investigate the matter and submit report within December 25.
